Common Drug Review 24 March 2008 The Hon. Tony Clement Minister of Health Minister's Office - Health Canada Brooke Claxton Building, Tunney's Pasture Postal Locator: 0906C Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1A 0K9
Dear Hon. Clement: Re: Prescription Drugs, Part 1 – Common Drug Review: An F/P/T process. Report of the Standing Committee on Health - December 2007 The purpose of this letter is to express the support of The Centre for ADHD/ADD Advocacy, Canada (CADDAC) for the recommendations made by the Standing Committee on Health on the Common Drug Review (CDR). We not only support the list of 5 recommendations but also support the suggestion made by the committee that the Office of the Auditor General should conduct a value for money review of the CDR. This value for money audit would also need to take into account the additional reviews that are conducted in each province before a new drug is funded for patients. In addition, we feel that the total time between Health Canada approval (Notice of Compliance) and the final listing decision in the last province should also be analyzed during this audit. This would be an effective overall measure of the success of the CDR. The Centre for ADHD/ADD Advocacy, Canada (CADDAC) is a national, not-for-profit organization providing leadership and support in advocacy and education for ADHD organizations and individuals across Canada. CADDAC’s mandate is to take a national, leadership role in networking all organizations, professionals, patients, caregivers and other stakeholders involved in ADHD related issues, and to then support those people through education and advocacy. Our vision is a future in which all Canadians living with ADHD are understood and appreciated for who they are and for what they can contribute to society. This vision sees these individuals and their families being served by effective, comprehensive, evidence-based health care and educational systems that maximize their outcomes in a spirit of acceptance and understanding. Our goal – to reduce the emotional and financial distress associated with ADHD while allowing access to best practices in medical treatments and educational support, all across Canada.
